Will a faster non-VR lens mounted on a monopod outperform a VR of equal focal length? - which monopod nikon d60 digital field guide

If you already have a VR lens are simply not fast, expensive academic question - but if we start from zero, which is the best option. My impression is that a target faster than 2 stops advantage of VR without interest - and give you more flexibility overall. Nikon Cannon NV subtleties please :-)
